Photo Print and Document Scans

Our goal is to provide you the best VALUE: the highest quality scans at the lowest possible cost.

There are many types of photo prints/documents and many conditions that require special pricing. We’ve tried to make our pricing understandable as well as complete, so you know exactly where you can save money without sacrificing quality or required convenience. Call us with any questions and let us help minimize your costs.

We’d love to provide you with full service scanning, but realize that you may possess the time, software and skills to crop, straighten and color correct your scans yourself. So, we offer ala carte pricing that lets you select only those services you need right now.

The most important thing is to PRESERVE all your photos/documents by getting them scanned immediately. Any of the other services listed below can be done at the same time, or at any time in the future.

 Stacked photo prints and documents
From 1.1” x 2.7” up to 12” x 18”, scanned at 400dpi.
Does NOT include manual cropping/color correction

MONEY SAVING TIP: This is the least expensive method of getting your photos and documents scanned, because we can use our highest speed scanning systems. All photos are cropped to their original borders. If you want your photos organized by groups, separate them with a piece of paper that has the group name written on it. The separator will be automatically scanned along with the photos. When you get your scans back, you can locate the group separator file and put the associated files into different folders on your computer yourself. Documents must be unbound and can be on any paper or card stock (up to postcard thickness).
$0.25 each

Severely curled, folded, wrinkled, extra-thick, glued, taped or over/undersize photo/document
Any size, scanned at average 400dpi, depending upon size.

MONEY SAVING TIP: Undersize is less than 1.1” x 2.7” and oversize is larger than 12” x 18”. The $5.00 one-time setup fee is for the changeover required between scanning stations on the same job.
$5.00 each side

New folders and/or file names

MONEY SAVING TIP: We give each file the same name (usually your last name or the date), plus a sequential number. When new folder or file names are required, we have to stop our automated scanning system and manually create the new folders and file paths. You can eliminate the surcharges for this service by using separators in your stack of photos.  See the tip in the "Stacked Photo Prints and Documents" row of this chart.
$2.00 each

Crop/straighten photo/document and then color correct

MONEY SAVING TIP: The most important reason to scan your photos is to stop their natural deterioration as well as to preserve and protect them by storing them on a CD/DVD in multiple locations. Our standard scans include auto-cropping, but in some cases it may not be perfect. For example, photos with white borders and deckled edges will have some black in the border where the edge curves inward. Sometimes there is writing on the borders that should not be cropped. We separate our scanning charges from the crop/straighten and color correction charges because many of our clients have the time, software and skills to do that themselves. Most folks do NOT need this service. If you wish, you can always have us crop/straighten and color correct your images later. Our color correction is always done by a skilled technician, NOT automatically with software, because no one program can do the job perfectly. It’s just the state of the art. In the scan at right, the client asked for the image to be straightened according to the doorway, and then cropped to the maximum image area that was left, and then color corrected.

All images must be cropped before color correction. Otherwise, colors in the unwanted areas will affect the color correction in the good part of the image. Most photos taken earlier than the mid 1990’s require color correction due to natural deterioration. Without color correction, our basic scans are very close to the original photo's color.

$0.80 each

Crop/straighten photo/document

MONEY SAVING TIP: The $0.25 scan above includes auto-cropping/straightening, which leaves the photo leveled at the top and never crops away any part of the image, including physical borders. That is satisfactory for most customers. However, perfect cropping/straightening, which crops each side of a photo according to the client's rules, must be done manually. There are too many variables involved in cropping pictures (borderless, colored borders, borders with information written on them, pictures that have been cut or damaged, etc.) for software to automatically crop each photo perfectly. A human being has to make those decisions, because many of the rules are based upon sentiment rather than logic.

For instance, a photo may actually look more pleasing when borderless, but the client may want borders left as is if there is a sentiment written on them, or removed if it is just the date printed on the border by the photo finisher. Therefore, all perfect cropping/straightening decisions are made by a technician, following your personal set of rules. In the scan at right, the client asked for the horizon to be straightened, and then cropped to the maximum image area that was left. No color correction was required.

We price this separately, so if you have the time, skills and software, there’s no reason you can’t do this yourself. In the case of cropping individual photos/documents from full album page scans, this includes saving each cropped image as a unique file name.

$0.50 each

Physically remove photo/document from an album prior to scanning

MONEY SAVING TIP:  Remove as many photos from your albums as possible yourself and put them into a stack with a separator sheet that has the album name written on it. Leave photos/documents in the albums if removal will damage them. We can always scan them directly from the album pages.
$0.50 each
Physically replace photo/document back into an album after scanning

MONEY SAVING TIP:  When we remove photos from an album, we keep them physically batched together by album name. You can put the photos back into your albums yourself when you get the photos back. Many folks have us destroy the pictures once they receive their scans because of the space savings.  They can always get another print from the scan.
$0.50 each
Scan photos/documents while they remain in the album
Any size album. The entire album page is in one file.

MONEY SAVING TIP:  Some photos have to remain in the album. Perhaps they were glued onto the page and removing them would destroy the image. Digitizing an album page requires many manual steps and is much slower than our fully automated photo scanning system. The quality of the digital image is just as high; the process is merely slower. Pages need to be turned, leveled (to keep images square) and positioned. To minimize these charges, remove as many photos from your albums as possible and put them into your stack, separating the group with a labeled sheet of paper.

In the case of cropping individual photos/documents from full album pages, there is a $0.50 per image charge for this service (see the Cropping section above). In the scan at right, if the client had asked for the three individual photos from the album page to be cropped into three separate files, there would have been an additional charge of $1.50.

The $5.00 one-time setup fee is for the changeover required between scanning stations on the same job.

Film and Slide Scans
Scanning film and slides is very different than scanning photo prints. Film always has minor scratches on its surface, as well as minute dirt/dust particles. Unless eliminated, these scratches and dust will show up in any print made from the scan. We use Kodak’s Digital ICE hardware/software system to eliminate these imperfections from your scan. In addition, each scan is cropped and color corrected.
Mounted 35mm Slide
Scanned at 2,000dpi.

MONEY SAVING TIP: 2,000dpi scans can easily be enlarged up to 8” x 10”. Add $0.40 for 3,000dpi and $0.90 for 4,000dpi.
$0.80 each

Unmounted 35mm Slide, or APS film, or B/W Slide, or Color Negative or B/W Negative
Scanned at 2,000dpi.

MONEY SAVING TIP: This pricing assumes we will scan all the images on one 35mm film strip (there are between 4 and 6 images on each film strip). It also assumes we will scan the entire APS film strip. To scan only specific images on a film strip, each scan costs $2.60.
$0.80 each

120/220 (2.25” x 2.25”) Slides or Film
Scanned at 1,000dpi.

MONEY SAVING TIP: With this larger medium-format sized image to start with, 1,000dpi scans can easily be enlarged up to 8 ” x 10”.  Add $1.00 for 2,000dpi, $5.00 for 3,000dpi and $8.00 for 4,000dpi.
$3.00 each
New folders and/or file names

MONEY SAVING TIP: We give each file the same name (usually your last name), plus a sequential number (i.e. yourname-1234.jpg). When new folder or file names are required, we have to stop our automated scanning system and manually create the new folders and file paths. You can eliminate these surcharges by doing the same thing on your own computer.
$2.00 each

Severely curled, extra-thick, glued, taped or other non-standard mounted slide
Scanned at 2,000dpi.

MONEY SAVING TIP: If a slide feeds properly in your slide projector, it will usually work in our automated scanning equipment. If any of the above conditions exists, we must use manual scanning methods. In extreme cases, we have to remove the film from the slide mount before scanning. 2,000dpi scans can easily be enlarged up to 8” x 10”.  Add $0.40 for 3,000dpi and $0.90 for 4,000dpi.
$3.00 each
Advanced options for 35mm slides/film strips
Scanned at any resolution.

MONEY SAVING TIP: Our standard scan is extremely high in quality, and all that most people will ever need. However, we also offer scanning options such as 16-bit depth and up to 16 times re-sampling. Either or both of these options are covered by one single charge. If you don’t know what these options mean, you probably don’t need to purchase them.
